His excellency the deputy governor of the county government of Kisumu, CEC health, CEO JOOTRH, medical practitioners, ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning.
My name is Veronica Bitta, and I am honored to stand before you today as a caregiver and representative of the Tumaini Sickle Cell Organization. As we observe Sickle Cell Awareness Month, I want to take this opportunity to share a few words about the importance of awareness, advocacy, and support for those affected by sickle cell disease (SCD).
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, including many in our community. It is a condition that brings with it numerous challenges, both physical and emotional, for patients and their families. As a caregiver, I have witnessed firsthand the resilience and strength of those living with SCD, as well as the unwavering support of their loved ones.
At Tumaini Sickle Cell Organization, our mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by SCD. We believe that by raising awareness and promoting understanding of this disease, we can help reduce the stigma and discrimination that often accompany it. Our goal is to empower patients and caregivers with the knowledge and resources they need to manage the condition and improve their quality of life.
One of the most critical aspects of our work is education and awareness creation. Many people are still unaware of what sickle cell disease is, how it is inherited or transmitted from both parents to children, and the impact it has on those who live with it. By educating the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, we can create a more informed and compassionate society that is better equipped to support those affected by SCD.
Advocacy is another cornerstone of our efforts. We strive to ensure that the needs and rights of people living with sickle cell disease are recognized and addressed. This includes pushing for policy reforms, improved healthcare services, and better access to treatments and support systems. Our advocacy efforts are driven by the belief that every person with SCD deserves the best possible care and the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life
As we continue to raise awareness and advocate for change, we must also remember the importance of community. The support and solidarity of a caring community can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by sickle cell disease. Together, we can create a network of support that provides hope, encouragement, and strength to patients and their families.
In conclusion, I urge each of you to join us in our efforts to raise awareness, advocate for better care, and support those living with sickle cell disease. By working together, we can make a meaningful impact and help improve the lives of countless individuals and families affected by this condition.
Thank you.
