Speech by Noela Glory at the Sickle Cell Awareness Walk and Campaign 2024
‘Warrior’s Perspective to managing Sickle Cell Disease‘
Hi everyone,
My name is Noela Glory, and I am a year 10 student at Mudasa International School. I am honored to stand before you today as a proud sickle cell warrior. Living with sickle cell disease has its challenges, but I have learned to manage it positively and effectively.
One of the key aspects of managing my condition is through proper nutrition. I ensure that I eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to keep my body strong and healthy. Adherence to medication is also crucial. I never miss a dose and always follow my doctor’s instructions.
Immunization has played a significant role in my journey. I have been vaccinated against influenza, typhoid, pneumonia, and meningitis to protect myself from infections that could trigger a sickle cell crisis. Staying active and hydrated is another important part of my routine. Regular exercise keeps my body fit, and drinking plenty of water helps prevent dehydration, which can lead to complications.
Maintaining a positive mental and emotional wellness is essential. I surround myself with supportive friends and family who encourage me to stay strong and optimistic. I am proud to say that I have not experienced a sickle cell crisis for close to 10 years, and I can go for a year without falling sick.
As we celebrate Sickle Cell Awareness Month, I want to reinforce the importance of lifestyle changes in managing sickle cell disease. With the right approach, we can lead fulfilling lives and achieve our dreams. Let us continue to raise awareness, support each other, and strive for a better future for all sickle cell warriors.
Thank you.
I hope this speech inspires and encourages others to manage their condition positively.
